I receive many questions from up and coming singer/songwriters/performers about how to go about recording, choosing a producer etc ….
Thought this may be beneficial to others as well…
—————————————————————————-
re – recommendations for a great producer or producing in general?
Make a list of the top 15 tracks that you really like how they SOUND. Network as much as you can, meet producers and ask them for some examples of their work. Make yourself a promise to check out at least 10 producers before deciding. That does not mean you may not meet/hear someone you will click with instantly – But it will take the pressure off the process.
Never assume that a producer who is very successful and known will automatically not be interested in listening to your stuff. Try getting to those guys too – especially to the ones you admire. Not all singers / performers take the time to look up who produced or who plays on some of their favorite records. Contact these people – you may not end up working with you but they may give you some leads and tips that are priceless. Most of the top producers I personally know are ALWAYS looking to discover some fresh raw talent.
The decision on who to use it’s up to you – but I highly recommend taking the emotional element in the decision making out of the equation – Stay true to, and honor the music. If it’s right for the music – the confusion and obsession will fade away. It always happens this way – you know when it’s right.
re – Its overwhelming making decisions like this, I obsess and lose time in the obsession …
Let it go. The answers are never there in the overwhelmed or confused state. Always remind yourself the process should be fun – that’s why it’s called “playing” music. As soon as you stop obsessing about the fact that you have some questions – the answers will appear. They always do.
re – In your mind what is the most important determinant and how should I prepare to enter into a recording project?
I would first come up with the top 15 tracks you want to record. Give some people who’s ears you trust copies and get some feedback. I personally always prefer variety production-wise on a record but it’s not a must. Also keep in mind you do not have to use the same producer for the whole record. Or at least not be making this decision this early in the process. Another possible angle is taking it track by track – for example thinking /planning / obsessing about recording 3 tracks is somewhat lighter then “recording my first album” – you know what I mean ?
Stay open to suggestions and to other people’s ideas. Many artists entering the process of recording their first “real” album are not used to working so intimately with a producer/collaborator. Be sure to copyright whatever material you send out – BEFORE you send it out. Document the process with videos/blog entries/photos.
